Taking care of IT for East Cheshire Hospice

Delta Comtech is celebrating a successful project at the East Cheshire Hospice, a registered charity based in Macclesfield providing special care for adults suffering from life-limiting illnesses for which there is no cure.

Our goal for this project was to examine the present network and provide a solution that would support the hospice both now and into the future. We analysed the current situation, looked at how the hospice worked and planned a system that would function within the current requirements as well as making the network both easier to use and administer.

Before the plan was finalised we created a demonstration setup, which allowed Hospice IT Manager Mike Drew to test drive the proposed new system. This way, Mike was able to study the new technology available to the hospice before committing to any of the options.

Since the hospice receives less than 23% of its annual costs from government and has to fundraise nearly £6,000 every day just to keep going, restricting costs to a minimum was also a priority for the project. Delta Comtech Operations Director Geoff Barratt examined the options to enable the hospice to maximise the discounts available.

Geoff explains, “Using knowledge I have gained from nearly two decades in the IT industry, I managed to link ECH up with a company called CTX who deal with donated software and hardware for charities. I helped to get them through the approval process and then assisted with ordering the correct products. This saved the hospice several thousand pounds on the overall cost of the project."

With the hospice relying on its IT systems 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, the work to set up the new network had to be carefully planned, and was undertaken over a weekend to minimise disruption, with crucial applications still available to hospice staff throughout the weekend.

As part of the project, we also looked at how IT could be used to improve communications within the hospice, and implemented a new internal website based on Microsoft SharePoint, where announcements, pictures, newsletters and documents could be shared easily amongst staff and volunteers. Improving remote access was also a crucial part of the plan; our solution was to provide web-based access which was both secure and easy to use.

Mike Drew, IT Manager at East Cheshire Hospice added, “ the project undertaken by Delta Comtech gave the hospice the opportunity to improve IT services to staff, volunteers and patients. The installation was designed to incorporate all of our requirements and was well structured and implemented. The service we received was excellent and we look forward to a continuing relationship with the company”.

The hospice has fundraising events throughout the year including the Bring £1 to work day on the 27th May 2010, a weekly lottery and for the more adventurous a Charity Raft Race on Saturday 26th June 2010.
