How to buy friends and influence people
As interest continues to grow in the commercial use
of social networking sites such as Twitter, one
company asks why you would spend time making friends
when you can simply buy them. |

An Australian company is selling users to
those wishing to boost their Twitter
audience – an offer which could be of
particular interest to businesses.
Commercial use of the Internet blogging site
continues to grow as organisations explore
new ways to generate sales. Now uSocial
claims that Twitter followers are worth big
money to businesses and that it can help
locate these followers in serious numbers
for paying customers.
How does it work?
On its site, the Australian marketing firm
explains: “The more followers you have, the
more money you will inevitably make
marketing your products and services to
them. While all followers won't be
responsive customers, many will - with our
own accounts we find that each follower we
have is worth about $0.10 to us every
month.”
So how do they do it? uSocial identifies
potential followers by searching Twitter and
monitoring what subjects individual users
are interested in. A message is then sent to
the user suggesting a particular customer
account to follow.
How much does it cost?

|
The company’s
charges range from 87 dollars for 1,000 followers to 4,970
dollars for a block of 100,000 and it claims customers are
queuing up to use the service. uSocial has a reported 150
subscribers and another 80 to 90 projects waiting in the
wings with clients ranging from yoga teachers to religious
organisations looking to spread the word of God. |

In an interview with the BBC, Leon
Hill, Chief Executive of uSocial,
defended the service as non
intrusive underlining how it is
ultimately up to the user whether or
not to act upon a suggestion to
follow. Hill added that uSocial
simply continues searching for
followers until the specified number
has signed up to its customer’s
account.
